Sometimes in life, the stars just align and great things happen. This is how my husband, four daughters and I feel about meeting our Florida Keys realtor, Kirsten Miller. Our paths crossed in a most unusual way. In December 2024, I received devastating news after suffering a random seizure on the side of a highway on the way home from a Christmas trip to New York City. On that day, I found out I had a large brain tumor. I was rushed into an emergency 12-hour brain surgery. The surgery went as well as could be expected and the tumor was ultimately determined to be non-cancerous. The following months were tough…on the whole family. The recovery was scary and grueling and we knew life would never be the same. It couldn’t be. After receiving unexpected news and facing the reality that my life could be over—that our children could lose their mother, that my husband could potentially be facing raising our family on his own—things for me would never be the same again. Life just looked differently for me from that day forward. Six weeks after my surgery, we decided to take a trip to Marathon to escape the cold winter, to feel the sun on our faces and to heal. We needed some time together to process all that had happened and to feel joy. We didn’t know how long we would be gone or where we were going to stay, we just drove. But...if you know, you know—and there’s something very magical and special about the Keys. For the first time in a long time, we could finally relax, pray, laugh, let down our guard, be in nature and HEAL as a family. On that recovery trip, we came to realize that life is not promised. We all dream of the “some days”. John and I were hit with the abrupt reality that for some people sometimes that “Some Day” never comes. Life gets in the way, unexpected things happen. We decided our “Some Day” dreams would start that day. We made plans. We decided to buy a second home in the Keys, something we really only imagined we would do in retirement. We called a trusted realtor friend, the King of Ocean City, Maryland--Jamie Caine--and asked him for a referral to a realtor in the Keys. He put us in contact with Kirsten Miller and it was, hands down, the best decision of our entire home buying process. We spoke on the phone prior to our first house hunting trip to the Keys. Kirsten asked questions, got to know us and set us on the right path. We planned a quick 4 day trip to Marathon to look at homes and when we arrived, Kirsten was more than ready for us! She set up appointments to maximize our time and helped us hone in on what our family wanted and needed in a vacation property. We covered some serious ground that week and Kirsten was up for the task. No question was too trivial, no request was met with resistance. If she didn’t know something, she said so and reported back when she DID have an answer. As with many real estate transactions, ours was not straight forward. There were twists and turns and disappointments and complications. One thing that was constant and steady for us was Kirsten. In her true genuine Kirsten way, Kirsten always put us at ease, always got the ship righted. One of the phrases that comes to mind is Kirsten saying (on multiple occasions), “Isn’t this fun? Come on guys, this is fun!” And she meant it. Because Kirsten loves and cares for people. She enjoys her work as a real estate professional. And it shows. And she is pretty darn amazing at it. Our family will forever be grateful to Kirsten for helping make our "Some Day" purchase our today reality. And we couldn't be happier.
